Genevieve McGuckin is gathering audio, video footage, pictures and fan opinions for a Rowland S. Howard anthology currently in the works! You can contribute via her Facebook.

And don't forget Richard Lowenstein's documentary, which is still set to be released at the 2011 Melbourne International Film Festival, as 1 of 5 films being co-financed by the MIFF Premiere Fund this year.     PREMIER FUND FOCUS: AUTOLUMINESCENT - ROWLAND S. HOWARD

    Directed by Richard Lowenstein (2001's HE DIED WITH A FALAFEL IN HIS HAND and 2009's WE'RE LIVIN' ON DOGFOOD) and Lynn-Maree Milburn, AUTOLUMINESCENT is an intimate portrait of the turbulent life of influential rock guitarist and songwriter Rowland S. Howard. Howard first came to notice in the Melbourne rock scene in the 1970s before finding international acclaim in the 1980s with the Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party. He died awaiting a liver transplant after recording 2009's "Pop Crimes," his first and most successful solo album in more than a decade.

    Featuring fascinating archival footage and new interviews with Wim Wenders, Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch and many others. AUTOLUMINESCENT joins FALLING FOR SAHARA, BEN LEE: CATCH MY DISEASE, THE TRIANGLE WARS and SWERVE as one of five MIFF Premiere Fund co-financed films that will have their world premieres at MIFF 2011.


I Knew Buffalo Bill

Munster Records has now re-released I Knew Buffalo Bill, a collaboration between Jeremy Gluck, Nikki Sudden and Rowland S. Howard, as a double LP. The new edition contains all but one track from the original album, b-sides, demos and live material. More information can be found here, and also here.

Here is a personal piece about seeing The Birthday Party for the first time, written and submitted to us by Victoria Jaschob in tribute to Rowland.

    Paris can be unbearably hot and sticky in the summertime, and 1982 was no exception. I was nineteen and living in a big apartment on the Left Bank, supposedly studying film at the Sorbonne. During the day I worked in my flatmate's reggae music store, and at night I ran the lights for my other flatmate's tiny theater. In between, I smoked Silk Cut cigarettes, drank "33" beer, and listened to music: reggae, punk, and Edith Piaf. The thing I wasn't doing, my actual reason for being in Paris, was going to film school. But I didn't care. In those days, all I really cared about was music, drinking, and boys.

October Boy

Mick Harvey's new album Sketches From The Book Of The Dead features a song dedicated to Rowland - "October Boy". In Mick's words: "'October Boy' tells of a friend born a little pointed ... with a witty tongue who wrenched and tortured his guitar."
