RSH Tribute Page Charity Fundraiser

During his life, Rowland S. Howard supported the Mirabel Foundation, an Australian organization which supports the needs of children orphaned and abandoned due to parental drug use. He was one of over 30 Australian musicians to contribute to the Rock Chefs for Mirabel cookbook.

In his memory, the Rowland S. Howard Tribute Page on Facebook is currently holding a fundraising competition, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Mirabel Foundation.

Everyone who donates will be entered into a drawing to win prizes, which were submitted by family, friends and fans alike. So far, the prizes are as follows:

  1. Autoluminescent DVD, an RSH tin, and an RSH print
  2. Dogs in Space DVD, a signed Harry Howard & the NDE CD, and an RSH print
  3. I Knew Buffalo Bill CD signed by Jeremy Gluck, an issue of Uncut magazine featuring Nick Cave, and an RSH doll

Rowland S. Howard Laneway Project: Success!

There are celebrations in St Kilda tonight as the Port Phillip Council has voted unanimous in favour of the naming of a laneway after Rowland S Howard, the legendary guitarist of The Birthday Party, who died from liver cancer in 2009.

The laneway is between Eildon Road and Jackson Street in St Kilda...

The exact name of the laneway is yet to be determined. According to Nick Haines, VicRoads will first need to approve the name, as full names are against the rules, along with the iconic "S." Port Phillip Council have applied for an exemption to this rule.

RSH Tribute at ATP Release the Bats

ATP's Release the Bats (26 Oct 2013) has just added Pop Crimes: The Songs of Rowland S Howard to their event plan. Organized by Mick Harvey, and featuring Rowland's "friends, family and collaborators," it will cover music throughout Rowland's career, similar to the St Kilda Memo shows.

Finally, an update from Nick Haines regarding the Rowland S Howard Laneway Project:

UPDATE!
The petition regarding the naming of a lane in St Kilda the 'Rowland S Howard Lane' will be going before Council at its Ordinary Meeting on Tuesday 23 April 2013 at 6pm at St Kilda Town Hall,Brighton Road (corner Carlisle Street).
I'll be there (naturally) so any locals that may want to turn up that would be great as support would be most welcome.
Hoping to post some good news here next week. Fingers crossed folks!!!


Rowland S Howard 'The Prince of St Kilda' Tribute (Pt 4)

Both SOLD OUT tribute nights at the St Kilda Memo went off without a hitch! Photos and reviews have been popping up all over the place, and collected at record-breaking speed by the Rowland S Howard Tribute Page (which is now nearing 2000 members), as well as the Crown Prince of the Crying Jag tribute page.

ETA: The entire tribute was filmed by Mick Bell and Nick Cowan, who have posted a few clips to youtube. A playlist has been compiled here.

Update: Rowland S.Howard Laneway Project

Nick Cave has added his voice to those asking that a laneway in St Kilda be named after Rowland S. Howard.

"Rowland and I were friends, bandmates, collaborators and fellow conspirators in the St Kilda music scene in the late '70s and early '80s. His artistic legacy endures, and I hope that you can honour him with the cultural recognition he richly deserves," Cave wrote in a letter to the Port Phillip city council, urging them to consider a petition lodged by music promoter Nick Haines last week...
